Valkyrie Origins

Valkyries history is a little convoluted as what they represented was more well known than how they came about.

The truth of the matter is that they began as a mages curse. A man slighted by a beautiful woman who was married and in love with a soldier. The mage was furious that the woman would not share his bed and so he cursed her to never see her husband again, for if she did he would certainly die in the next battle he was in.

As a sign of the curse the woman's back was scarred with something that looked like wings on her back.

The next time she saw her husband and touched him he was marked with what Valkyries call "the call of Valhalla". A small mark where they touched them that looks like a compass. This mark was the man's mark of a valiant and heroic death.

The first Valkyrie did not believe she was cursed until she felt the cold rush through her veins as the man died on the battlefield. Scared and not knowing what happened but feeling a pull toward the man she burst from her home and wings burst from her back to bring her to her fallen husband. The woman sobbed over his corpse for hours before she finally lifted to bring him home so she could send him properly to Valhalla.

This Valkyrie, then turned to the mage that had cursed her and marked him. Soon she would have a daughter of her original husband and this would start the line.

What is a Valkyrie?

Valkyries are first and foremost warriors. They chose long ago that if anyone was to die that they would be the first on the battlefield. Choosing to fight for justice and peace. This purpose has diluted over the years due to the massive amount of useless wars, however still their primary goal.

Additionally, Valkyries are the summoners of death. They have strict rules on who they can summon death upon, it must be someone going into battle and it cannot be someone they know personally. They additionally prefer that the death be meaningful. This means this ability is not used very often.

How to become a Valkyrie

Valkyries are born of Valkyrie mothers. They are only females. A Valkyrie is completely free of their gift until they hit puberty. At this time the mark of the Valkyrie, the scarred wings, appear on their back and they are now able to mark people for death.

Most Valkyries will tattoo over the scars of their wings to make it less prevalent.

Powers

Wings - All Valkyries have hidden wings that they can call on command or when extremely distressed. They can fly with these wings.

Strength - Valkyries are extremely adept and powerful fighters. They are able to nearly lift a car off the ground.

Mark of death - Valkyries can actively choose to mark someone for death. This mark can be removed by a mage or a Valkyrie only. Once marked for death you will die in the next battle/fight/conflict you are in which means removing it as soon as possible is important.

Weaknesses

Valkyries are cursed to die in a fight or battle of some sort. This means that any fight they get into could be their last, as such, while they learn to fight from a young age, they try to avoid getting into them.
